Always check berries and remove any damaged berries to prevent the spread of mold. But don’t wash berries until right before eating as washing will remove the bloom that protects the berries’ skins from degradation. If kept out at room temperature for more than a day, the berries may spoil.

Cantaloupe Gets an A+;

Cantaloupe as an excellent source of vitamin A on account of its concentrated beta-carotene content. Once inside the body, beta-carotene can be converted into vitamin A, so when you eat cantaloupe it’s like getting both these beneficial nutrients at once. One cup of cantaloupe is only 56 calories. Beta-carotene has also been the subject of extensive research in relationship to cancer prevention and prevention of oxygen-based damage to cells.

Cantaloupe is also an excellent source of vitamin C. Vitamin C functions as an antioxidant. Vitamin C is critical for good immune function and is associated with a reduced risk of death from all causes including heart disease, stroke and cancer. It stimulates the white cells to fight infection, directly kills many bacteria and viruses, and regenerates Vitamin E after it has been inactivated by disarming free radicals. How to Select;

The key to purchasing a good quality melon sometimes a challenge. If you tap the melon with the palm of your hand and hear a hollow sound, the melon has passed the first test. Choose a melon that seems heavy for it’s size, and with no bruises or overly soft spots. The rind, underneath the netting, should be yellow or cream. The area where the stem was attached, should be smooth and slightly indented and you should be able to smell the fruit’s sweetness shining through. For the most antioxidants, choose fully ripened melon:

Kiwifruit;

Kiwifruit can offer a great deal more than an exotic tropical flair in your fruit salad. Kiwifruit has fascinated researchers for its ability to protect DNA from oxygen-related damage. Researchers are not yet certain which compounds in kiwi give it this protective antioxidant capacity, but they are sure that this healing property is not limited to those nutrients most commonly associated with kiwifruit.

Kiwi fruit is an excellent source of vitamin C, E and Fiber. Kiwi can help in the neutralizing of free radicals that can cause damage to cells and lead to problems such as inflammation and cancer. In fact, adequate intake of vitamin C has been shown to be helpful in reducing the severity of conditions like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and asthma, and for preventing conditions such as colon cancer, atherosclerosis, and diabetic heart disease. And since vitamin C is necessary for the healthy function of the immune system, it may be useful for preventing many infections and illnesses. Kiwi also helps with Cardiovascular and Colon Health, cholesterol levels, heart disease and heart attack. Removing toxins from the colon, which is helpful for preventing colon cancer.

How to Select and Store;

When selecting kiwifruits, hold them between your thumb and forefinger and gently apply pressure; those that have the sweetest taste will yield gently to pressure. Avoid those that are very soft, shriveled or have bruised or damp spots. If kiwifruits do not yield when you gently apply pressure with your thumb and forefinger, they are not yet ready to be consumed since they will not have reached the peak of their sweetness. Ripe kiwifruits can be stored either at room temperature or in the refrigerator. For the most antioxidants, consume fully ripened kiwifruit.

Papayas;

Papayas offer the luscious taste and sunlit color of the tropics, but are rich sources of antioxidants, vitamin C, flavonoids, B vitamins, folate, and the minerals, potassium and magnesium; and fiber. How to Select and Store;

If you want to eat them within a day of purchase, choose papayas that have reddish-orange skin and are slightly soft to the touch. Those that have patches of yellow color will take a few more days to ripen. While a few black spots on the surface will not affect the papaya’s taste. Papayas that are partially yellow should be left at room temperature where they will ripen in a few days. Ripe papayas should be stored in the refrigerator and consumed within one or two days. For the most antioxidants, eat papaya fully ripened.

The five stages are:

1. Pre- contemplation

2. Contemplation

3. Preparation

4. Action

5. Maintenance

The characteristics are distinct and recognizable. It is my job to point out  to customers, clients, and prospects that you will be in the contemplation and/ or preparation stage for at least one area (fitness, weight, nutrition, stress, health) and  my coaching program will help you reach the maintenance phase (sustaining the new behavior consistenly week to week) within 3-6 months. It is my job as a coach to help you move forward in areas where you have been pre- contemplating and recognize the openings during our coaching discussions. When you progress in one area your confidence in changing will grow and you will become ready to move forward  in another area.

1. Pre- contemplation

Two types of people in this catagory people either are thinking about changing the “I won’t” and the “I can’t” people.

2. Contemplation

This is the “I may” stage. At this stage, clients, customers, and prospects are thinking about changing an unhealthy behavior and are considering taking action within the next six months.

3. Preparation

At this stage you will be using the terms “I will”. Your motivation has strengthened and you are planning to take some action within a month.

4. Action

This is better known as the “I am” stage. You have identified the new behavior that you want to establish and are doing it consistenly, building up to your target levels.

5. Maintenance

We say this is the “I still am” stage. This stage usually begins six months after the initial behavior has changed.

Weight training makes a person healthy, fit and strong. It is not just for people who want to build muscle, but for everyone who likes to stay fit and keep the excess weight off.

If you want to get in shape or stay in shape you can walk, run or cycle every morning, play sports with friends, but if you want to have muscles and look lean, then lifting some weights either at the gym or at home is your best bet.

People go to the gym for many reasons. eg:

To lose a few pounds if they are overweight.

To gain a few pounds (of muscle) if they are underweight.

To get fit and Healthy.

To get strong.

The most effective exercise plan for most should have some cardiovascular work and mostly weight training exercises. This helps burn calories and increase the muscle to fat ratio better than cardiovascular work alone.

Some Benefits of Weight training:

1. It is the best way to maintain and improve ones health from a variety of diseases and premature death.

2. It makes a person feel better and increases ones self confidence, prevents depression, anxiety

and gloom.

3. A weight training lifestyle helps a person live longer than an inactive person.

4. It instils discipline into a person, making other things in life easy.

5. It makes one stronger physically and mentally.

To start: one should consult a physician to get the go ahead and then get into it gradually.

Getting stronger, fitter, healthier week by week building up more endurance will be of great benefit to you.

Aim for 3 or 4 days a week working out, this is sufficient no matter what your goals are.

Maintain a reasonable diet.

You could consult with a professional to get an excellent eating plan to match your goals and gym

activities.They will evaluate you based on your needs, and recommend a diet plan.

A good diet should have nutrients from all the food groups.

This is made up by 3 basic groups.

The first is carbohydrates.The energy source. The food that a person consumes should have vitamins, minerals and some fiber. A lot of this comes from oats, rice, potatoes, cereals and breads, and also from vegetables and fruits since these have phytochemicals, enzymes and micronutrients that are essential for a healthy diet.

The Second is Protein. The building blocks of muscle and essential organs.This comes from fish, chicken, red meat and dairy. Protein is broken down in the body to form amino acids for repair and

growth of new cells.

The third is fat. The body’s enemy, according to most.There are 4 types of fat: Saturated (the bad) from animals, the more animal fat you consume the higher your blood cholesterol will rise, increasing the risk of a malfuntion in the body.Should be taken in small quantities.Sources are: Beef, dairy, coconut oil.

Polyunsaturated (the good) Comes from plants, reduces blood cholesterol. Sources are: nuts,fish, safflower oil, seeds, corn oil and sunflower oil.

Monounsaturated (the best) also comes from plants, raises the good cholesterol.Sources are: Avocado,

olive oil, olives, nuts, canola oil and peanut butter.

Trans fats (the ugly) This is relatively new, the effects are unknown, it is believed that they behave like saturated fat (the bad) causing blood cholesterol levels to rise.

The consumption of fats (the good fats) is important for our health. They are used in the production of hormones and other activities.We do need some fat, but do limit the bad.

A great way to help your efforts in the gym is to give up some detrimental habits such as smoking and drinking alcohol. Smoking damages the lungs and dramatically increases the risk of lung cancer along with other diseases. Excessive drinking has also been shown to causes major diseases.

These two habits are definitely not worth having around.

The best thing one can do for themselves is to quit any destructive habits they have and get into that gym, start pumping some iron and look forward to greater Health and Fitness.
